Violence begets violence

The conflict in Gaza has left me speechless, not least because many years ago I spent three months living in Palestine. Some words from Martin Luther King keep coming back to me:

Hate begets hate; violence begets violence; toughness begets a greater toughness. We must meet the forces of hate with the power of love.

And while I was trying to find the source of that quote, I came across this:

through violence you may murder a murderer, but you can’t murder murder. Through violence you may murder a liar, but you can’t establish truth. Through violence you may murder a hater, but you can’t murder hate through violence. Darkness cannot put out darkness; only light can do that. (from ‘Where Do We Go From Here?’)
